Kid Parent Yoga FAQs

Kid yoga offers numerous benefits, including improved concentration, enhanced flexibility and strength, better stress management, and increased self-esteem. It also provides a fun way for kids to develop discipline and body awareness.

Yoga can be introduced to kids as young as 3 years old. Classes are tailored to be age-appropriate, focusing on simple poses, games, and activities that encourage movement and mindfulness in a playful environment.

Yoga for kids is designed to engage young minds and bodies with more animated poses, interactive games, and imaginative stories that align with their developmental needs and interests, making the practice fun and accessible.

Engaging parents in yoga with their kids at a yoga studio cultivates a sense of connection, mindfulness, and healthy habits.

As the first immersive yoga studio in Singapore, Spirit Stretch engages parents in yoga with their kids in a conducive studio environment. Kid-friendly immersive projections are curated specially for Kid Parent Yoga classes, with themed classes that appeal to kids and parents alike, such as “Animal Yoga” with an animated projection of an animal safari, “Storytime Yoga” with projections of an underwater world or aquatic experience, and even “Adventure Yoga” with a dinosaur park projection and more.

Our specially trained Kid Parent Yoga instructors ensure that parents are actively involved during the class, whether through incorporating partner poses that require kids and parents to bond and interact together, making yoga a shared journey for both parent and child.

The studio is designed to be suitable for kids to play or relax before or after class, allowing parents to engage with their children in a less formal setting.

By creating a family-friendly environment and offering engaging Kid Parent Yoga classes in our immersive environment, Spirit Stretch hopes to involve parents in yoga with their kids, helping to build strong family bonds and promote a healthy, active lifestyle for families.

Comfortable, stretchy clothing is best, allowing for free movement. Spirit Stretch provides mats, but your child can bring their own. A water bottle is also a good idea to keep them hydrated.

Yoga can be particularly beneficial for kids with anxiety or hyperactivity. The practice teaches breathing techniques and mindfulness exercises to help calm the mind, reduce stress, and manage energy levels more effectively.

Yoga is a wonderful way to bond while introducing children to the benefits of yoga in a fun and interactive way. Here are some easy and playful poses that are great for both kids and parents to practice together:

1. Partner Tree Pose:

  • Stand next to your child, shoulder to shoulder, and hold hands or place an arm around each other's waist for balance. Both lift the outer leg and place the sole of the foot on the inner thigh or calf of the standing leg, creating a "tree" shape together. The parent can provide support while the child finds balance.

This pose improves balance, coordination, and strengthens the legs.

2. Double Downward Dog

  • The parent gets into a traditional Downward Dog position with hands and feet on the ground, hips raised.
  • The child then places their hands on the ground in front of the parent’s hands and their feet on the parent's lower back or hips, creating a smaller Downward Dog on top.

This pose stretches the entire body, strengthens the arms and legs, and provides a playful challenge.

3. Seated Forward Bend with Butterfly Legs

  • Sit facing each other with your legs in a "butterfly" position (soles of the feet together, knees bent out to the sides).
  • Hold each other's hands and gently lean back while your child leans forward, stretching each other's legs and backs.
  • Switch roles to stretch both partners.

This pose stretches the hamstrings and back while promoting teamwork and flexibility.

4. Partner Boat Pose

  • Sit facing each other with knees bent and toes touching.
  • Hold each other’s hands and slowly lift your feet, bringing the soles together while balancing on your sit bones to form a "boat" shape.
  • You can try straightening the legs if comfortable.

This pose strengthens the core and improves balance while encouraging communication and cooperation.

5. Cat-Cow Stretch Together

  • Get on your hands and knees side by side.
  • As the parent moves into Cat Pose (arching the back), the child can move into Cow Pose (dropping the belly and lifting the head), and then switch.
  • You can sync the movements together, creating a flowing sequence.

This pose stretches the spine and improves coordination.

6. Partner Warrior II

  • Stand side by side in a wide stance.
  • Both extend your arms out to the sides and bend the front knee to move into Warrior II pose.
  • Hold hands with the extended arms closest to each other.
  • Encourage your child to feel strong and balanced like a warrior.

This pose strengthens the legs, improves balance, and builds confidence.

7. Child’s Pose on Parent’s Back

  • The parent gets into a Child’s Pose position, with knees wide and forehead resting on the mat.
  • The child gently climbs onto the parent’s back and stretches out like a “starfish” or rests quietly.
  • This can be a calming pose and a nice way to relax together.

This pose provides a gentle stretch for the parent and a comforting, relaxing position for the kid.

8. Partner Bridge Pose

  • The parent lies on their back with knees bent and feet on the ground, lifting the hips into a Bridge Pose.
  • The child can crawl under the parent’s lifted hips, or, for more advanced play, stand or lie on the parent's thighs or belly as the parent holds the Bridge Pose.

Strengthens the back and glutes, and allows for creative play.

9. Lying Down Breathing Exercise

  • Lie down on your backs next to each other or with your child resting on your chest.
  • Practice deep breathing together, feeling the rise and fall of each other's breaths.

This pose encourages relaxation, mindfulness and connection through synchronised breathing.

10. Flying Airplane Pose

  • The parent lies on their back and brings their knees to their chest.
  • The child then leans against the parent’s shins, and the parent lifts them up into the air by straightening their legs, holding the child’s hands or torso.
  • The child can extend their arms out like an airplane.

This pose strengthens the parent’s core and legs, while the child experiences balance and fun “flying.”

These poses are simple and enjoyable, allowing both parent and child to engage in a shared yoga experience that nurtures their physical and emotional connection.
